One of Christianity’s oldest churches is in Turkey

A glimpse into the early roots of Christianity

Turkey is a place rich in Christian history, offering some of the oldest and most interesting sights of Christendom. One of the most remarkable is the Grotto of St Peter outside of Antakya, believed to have been dug by the Apostle Peter himself and festooned with a beautiful stone façade by the Crusaders. This makes it the oldest place of Christian worship in the world and is still visitable today. In the southeast of Turkey, Diyarbakır and its surrounding area are home to a number of impressive religious monuments, such as St. Mary Church. The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul is another of the country’s major Christian attractions, and a must-see for anyone interested in the history of Christianity.
