History of Alanya

Unveiling the Fascinating Journey through Time

It is assumed that prehistoric cave dwellers spent their vacations here; this information is based on the early stone age. Fossils have been discovered in various locations that provide evidence of the existence of this species (20,000 – 17,000 BC). Rich in strong history, we can see the evidence even today through the fortress that divides Alanya into two parts – Keykubat and Kleopatra. The Alanya Fortress is situated on a 10-hectare peninsula and is encompassed by walls that measure 6.5 km in length. This stronghold has been home to various civilizations, including Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman.

According to legend, in ancient times, the Roman general Mark Antony gave the city of Alanya to the last Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, as a wedding gift. The two spent their honeymoon right here, and it lasted 100 nights. Cleopatra was said to have received the beach, now known as the “Cleopatra beach”, due to its remarkable beauty. This beach is considered the 6th most beautiful in Europe and the 19th most beautiful beach in the world. On the other side of Alanya, the Keykubat beach was named after the Seljuk Sultan Keyqubad the Great, who conquered it in 1221.
