How to bring a Vehicle with Foreign License Plate to Turkey

Information of Requirements and Documentation Needed

Turkey is a great destination for those looking to explore a new and exciting landscape. For those who would like to do so with their own vehicle, either their own vehicle or a borrowed one, it is important to know the necessary requirements and conditions that need to be met before crossing the border.

Foreigners who want to come to Turkey with a vehicle must meet the condition of being a resident abroad. This means being abroad for at least 185 days in the last 1 year. Proof of this may be obtained by using the Residency Inquiry service online.

Documentation needed for entry includes a certificate of ownership, a passport or identity document that replaces a passport, and a traffic insurance policy. In cases of rental vehicles, a rental agreement is also required, along with a power of attorney if the vehicle is arriving via power of attorney.

Vehicles of Turkish citizens living abroad and foreign nationals holding a residence permit in Turkey can stay in Turkey for a maximum of 730 days, taking into account the residence permit period. On the other hand, vehicles of foreign citizens who do not have a residence permit in Turkey can only stay for 90 days.

It is possible to bring a vehicle with a license plate that belongs to someone else to Turkey by power of attorney or by leasing. All regulations pertaining to ownership transfer must be followed. The vehicle may only be used by the individual whose name is registered when entering Turkey, or their spouse, mother, father, or children who also reside abroad. In cases where the individual departs the country and leaves their vehicle behind, documents must be submitted to a customs office. The vehicle must be either delivered to the customs office, or the individual must submit an undertaking with two copies, which states that the vehicle will not be used by someone else.

By familiarizing oneself with all the regulations and conditions, foreigners can enjoy a safe and smooth visit to Turkey with their vehicle of choice.
